Vicky Sawyer—Craftsperson
Vicky Sawyers is an artist and craftsperson from
Dayton, Ohio but she’s called Greenville home since
2000. Vicky graduated from ECU in May 2006 with a B.F.A.
double major in Wood Design and Metal Design. She’s used
her skills at metal design to create decorative and
functional art including jewelry, books, sculptures and
wall hangings. Even though Vicky’s art is incredibly
beautiful, it’s her ability to sew that’s gotten so much
attention lately.
Vicky has been sewing by hand since her grandmother
taught her when she was seven years old and she’s been
sewing with a machine for the last fourteen years. By
the end of junior high, Vicky said she was really into
making her own clothes and “changing clothes the way I
wanted them.” Vicky went to a community college in Ohio
intent on Interior Design, but said she “wasn’t so
interested in picking out curtains for people. I wanted
to make them instead.” After she moved to Greenville,
she entered the Wood Design program at ECU and started
making furniture. She moved from furniture to sculpture
when she, “decided there was so much more out there that
I wanted to do.” Then she tried a metal survey class and
said she was completely hooked by her second class. “I’m
in love with the process and the doing, more than the
product,” she said. “Cups are my favorite—just hammering
for days—it’s so much fun.”
Sewing has always been a passion for Vicky and now she’s
trying to make it her career. Vicky said Art school
helped her sew even better. “It made me more aware of
the craftsmanship and gave me a better sense of clothing
design. It helped me verbalize why I was making what I
made.” She also worked for an alterations business and
honed her craft that way as well. Vicky recently started
her own business called Orange Eggs and is selling her
handbags, hoodies and other clothing and jewelry. She
even makes wedding dresses! She can work with you to
create a unique, one-of-a-kind dress for your big day
that will impress everyone that sees it. Vicky said, “I
like to have complete creative freedom and it’s fun
working with people and figuring out what they want.”
She said she loves to work with clothing or art that is
personal and creating something that is meaningful and
memorable.
Her amazing sewing talents can be seen in her featured
handbags and original hoodies. Her goal is to work from
her studio in her home and create entire clothing lines
to sell here in Greenville and through her website. She
said she would like to make a dress in only a few sizes
and that would be it. There would only be a few of the
dresses in that original style and the wearer would know
that they own the only one in their size. A lot of girls
would love to have a completely unique dress or outfit
to show off. Imagine walking into a room knowing for a
fact no one else will have on the same outfit as you!
Vicky wants to work with each individual customer to
create personal and expressive clothing and she said no
project was too big or too small. So whether you want a
new outfit to wear out on the town with friends, or the
perfect wedding gown, Vicky is your girl. If you would
